Kiwis are flying high at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions 2017
16 Jan 2017Paul Coll has beaten yet another world-ranked top 10 player, while Joelle King moves comfortably into round two.
If being the first kiwi male world-ranked inside the top 20 since Ross Norman wasn’t enough to start the year, qualifier Paul Coll has extended his winning streak to 10 matches after downing Egypt’s Ali Farag (WR#7) in 4 games at the Tournament of Champions in New York this afternoon: 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 (60 mins). Coll now advances to the quarter-finals where he will face England’s James Willstrop (WR#11) on Wednesday (NZ time).
Meanwhile Joelle King has beaten the Netherland’s Natalie Grinham (former WR#2) in 3 games: 11-4, 11-9, 7-11. King now faces England’s Laura Massaro (WR#5) in what will be a tricky second-round match tomorrow.
The J.P Morgan Tournament of Champions is in its 20th year and is contested at New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal, with 128 players competing for the first major honours of the year and one of the sports’ most sought after titles.
