Smythe Claims Title on Gold Coast
18 Jan 2016Joe Smythe has claimed the Under 13 Boys title whilst a number of other kiwis have finished with podium results after a tough day in the Gold Coast with Malaysia claiming numerous titles.
There were a number of kiwis in finals or with podium matches today so there was always a good chance for New Zealand to bring home a good chunk of silverware. The Under 11 Girls saw Maia Smales win her 5/6 playoff whilst Sophie Hodges found the top seeded Malaysian too strong for her with Hodges staying true to her seeding taking home the silver for New Zealand.
In the Under 11 Boys both Freddie Jameson and Mikarore Joyce had wins over their opponents in their 5/6 and 7/8 playoffs respectively.
The Under 13 Girls saw some tough battles for Ariata Kutia and Natalie Sayes in their 3/4 and 5/6 playoffs with both players not being able to get the wins today. Ruby Saies and Rakairoa Joyce both took their respective wins in the 9/10 and 11/12 playoffs.
The Under 15 Girls saw Winona-Jo take a win over fellow team mate Annaleise Faint whilst Anika Jackson found it tough going against her Malaysian counterpart in the final bringing home the silver medal.
The Under 15 boys saw Siveshearn Jaynessh face a tough Australian counterpart and he was not able to bring home the win in the 3/4 playoff. Glenn Templeton knocked off his Australian counterpart in the 7/8 playoff whilst teammates Kobe Fleming and Leo Fatialofa battled it out in the 9/10 playoff with Fatialofa coming out on top.
The Under 17 Girls podium finishes were dominated by New Zealand with Nadia Hubbard bringing home a silver with a loss to the Malaysian number 1 seed and Zoe Dykzeul managing to beat her Australian opponent in the 3/4 playoff. Rhiarne Taiapa and Ruby Turnbull both battled it out for the 5/6 positions with Taiapa edging out Turnbull.
The Under 17 Boys saw Matthew Lucente take a win from Australian Nicholas Calvert to claim the bronze whilst Corbin Faint had a tough loss to Australian Maaz Khatri in the 9/10 playoff. Ben Remihana took a win in his 13/14 playoff.
The Under 19 Girls saw Abbie Palmer out to try claim the title for the last time however her Malaysian opponent had different ideas and she took the win from Palmer. Kaitlyn Watts and Anna Hughes battled it out in the 3/4 playoff with Watts taking the win from Hughes. The 7/8 playoff saw Lauren Crowhurst fight hard but not managing to get the win today.
In the Under 19 Boys it had been tough work all week for the players and today proved no different. Rafa Yam and Alex Revington couldn't manage to take wins in their 5/6 and 7/8 playoff, however it proved more successful for Sam Sayes and Jayden Millard in their 9/10 and 15/16 playoffs, with Finn Trimble having a win due to default.
The Under 13 Boys was tough work for Mason Smales, Apa Fatialofa and Riley-Jack Vette-Blomquist with all three not able to take a win in their respective playoffs. Today however proved to be Joe Smythe's day, Smythe had to face the top seeded Australian Gregory Chan. Smythe had a strong performance in his first game taking the win 11-4, this seemed to fire up the Australian and he came back fighting in the second pushing Smythe to the edge, however Smythe kept his cool and clinched the second game 14-12. With Smythe on the verge of a title he kept his cool, but his Australian counterpart wasn't going to make it easy on him, with some great shots and work from both players the game went long, with everyone on the edge of their seats Smythe kept his cool and claimed the win 13-11 and the sole title for New Zealand.
Well done to all the kiwis who competed, the Trans-Tasman test series kicks off today and New Zealand will be looking to claim back the title they won in Invercargill last year.
